A growing city

The City of Kitchener estimates that its population had grown to 316,173 residents as of 2025, up from 256,885 in the 2021 Census. In Statistics Canada’s health survey for 2015 to 2016, 58.1% of adults in the Kitchener-Cambridge-Waterloo area said they were physically active for at least 150 minutes a week. Statistics Canada rated that as similar to the Ontario figure of 57.4% and the Canadian figure of 57.7%. Among young people aged 12 to 17 in the same area, 60.0% reported an average of 60 minutes of activity a day, matching the Ontario figure; the Canadian figure was 59.8%.

Along the Grand River

The Walter Bean Grand River Trail runs for more than 25 km through Kitchener, from Kiwanis Park in the north to Doon Valley Golf Course in the south. Pedestrians and cyclists can use it, and in winter it is used for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing.

Trails and natural areas

The City counts more than 125 kilometres of trails in Kitchener. The Iron Horse Trail, an asphalt multi-use trail kept free of snow and ice in winter, runs for approximately 5 km between Kitchener and Waterloo, from Ottawa Street in the south to Park Street in Waterloo. Huron Natural Area has more than 250 acres of protected forest and wetland and more than 7 km of trails.
